Beyond "Up NEPA!": The Endless Struggle for Light in Africa's Largest Economy
ABUJA, NIGERIA — Across Nigerian neighborhoods, few phrases carry as much nostalgia, irony, and collective exhaustion as the famous baseline chant: "Up NEPA!" Originally coined decades ago to celebrate the erratic restoration of electricity by the long-defunct National Electric Power Authority, the phrase remains a staple of Nigerian culture.
Yet today, that triumphant shout is rarely heard. Instead, it has been replaced by the steady, deafening hum of petrol and diesel generators—a constant reminder of Nigeria’s persistent energy crisis.
A Grid on the Brink of Collapse
Despite being Africa’s largest economy and holding vast reserves of natural gas and hydro potential, Nigeria’s power grid continues to struggle. Total national generation routinely hovers around a meager 4,000 to 5,000 Megawatts (MW) for a population exceeding 200 million people—a tiny fraction of the estimated 30,000 MW needed to sustain basic industrial and domestic demand.
The national grid's fragility remains a critical vulnerability, with multiple total system collapses plunging millions into widespread blackouts.
THE NIGERIAN POWER GAP
Current Grid Supply: 4,000 – 5,000 MW

Deficit: 25,000 MW (83% Shortfall)
When the grid fails, distribution companies (DisCos) see their load allocations fall to zero, cutting off homes, hospitals, and critical infrastructure in major cities such as Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt.
The Real Cost: Businesses on Life Support
For small-scale business owners, the lack of reliable power is a primary operational hurdle:
Barbers and Hairdressers: Spend up to 40% of daily income on petrol to keep clippers and dryers running.
Cold Storage Vendors: Face regular inventory losses due to spoiled meat, fish, and produce during multi-day outages.
Manufacturing & Tech Hubs: Forced to maintain expensive industrial diesel generators, driving up product prices and reducing competitiveness against foreign markets.
According to World Bank estimates, energy deficits cost the Nigerian economy tens of billions of dollars annually in lost GDP and operational friction.
Why Does the Darkness Persist?
Energy analysts point to a combination of systemic issues that have plagued the sector for decades despite multiple privatization drives:
Decaying Infrastructure: Aging transmission networks managed under the national grid struggle to carry even existing load capacities without tripping.
Gas Supply Constraints: Gas-to-power generation plants frequently face feed-gas shortages due to pipeline vandalism, pricing disputes, and unpaid debts across the value chain.
Liquidity and Metering Gaps: Unmetered customers, widespread estimated billing disputes, and collection losses leave distribution companies struggling to pay power producers, starving the sector of critical capital investment.
Is Decentralization the Solution?
Amid the broader grid challenges, localized successes highlight alternative paths forward. The deployment of independent power projects—such as the Geometric Power plant supplying Aba in Abia State—demonstrates that islanded, decentralized mini-grids can deliver steady electricity independent of the national network.
Furthermore, reforms under the Electricity Act have empowered state governments to generate, transmit, and distribute their own power, paving the way for regional energy independence. Coupled with a massive surge in rooftop solar adoption among households and the federal Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) aimed at closing the metering gap, the country is gradually shifting away from total reliance on a single centralized grid.
Until these structural reforms yield nationwide results, however, millions of Nigerians will continue to rely on solar inverters, generator fuel, and the faint hope that the next time power returns, it stays on long enough to earn a genuine "Up NEPA!"
