Nigeria’s Tinubu Launches Reelection Campaign

Nigeria's Tinubu launches re-election campaign as economic pain tests support | Reuters

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has formally launched his campaign for a second term ahead of the country’s January 2027 presidential election. Speaking at a rally in Kaduna, Tinubu defended his economic reforms, which have led to mounting public discontent, and promised renewed prosperity for Nigerians. After he was inaugurated in 2023, Tinubu scrapped longstanding fuel subsidies, a decision that contributed to inflation and intensified the country’s cost-of-living crisis. However, he rejected claims that his policies are responsible for Nigerians’ hardship and blamed previous administrations for the hunger and poverty his government is attempting to address. Beyond the economy, security is also expected to dominate the campaign, with armed banditry, kidnappings, and the prolonged Boko Haram insurgency continuing to threaten communities. Tinubu is expected to face former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra Governor Peter Obi in the 2027 polls.
